Laurel School District Begins All-Remote Learning

LAUREL, Del.- In two separate Monday announcements, the Laurel School District posted on its website that two students at the Laurel Middle School have received positive COVID-19 test results.  In the second announcement, the district also stated that it

The student who tested positive for COVID-19 had been in contact with 48 other individuals, including other students, teachers, staff and bus riders.

Some families say they are having a hard time adjusting to the back and forth between in-person and virtual learning.

Bridgette Dempsey has multiple family members in Sussex County schools. She says the frequent switching between in person and virtual learning is hurting students.

"Kids, and people in general, like stability and normalcy. Kids, in general, they thrive on normalcy and stability. When you take that away from them, they're kind of floundering, they're left foundering," she said.

Dempsey's grandson is entering school for the first time this year. She says that virtual learning is especially hard for the youngest students.

"It's just like watching TV. It doesn't seem real to him, so he can't make a school connection with a human being as a teacher," she said, "So once he was in school and he made that great connection, it was wonderful, and then it was all taken out from underneath of him in the last week."

The Laurel School District says that moving online was not an easy decision, but it was for the well being and safety of students and staff members.

All teachers in the Laurel School District are checking in with their classes on the new remote learning schedule, and the district is hoping to bring groups of students back to the classroom after Thanksgiving.
