CHINCOTEAGUE, VA.The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company has unveiled the dates for its Spring and Fall Chincoteague Pony roundups for this year. These roundups play a vital role in the care of the iconic ponies.

Spring Roundup Information:

  • South Herd: April 5, 2024, at 4:30 pm
  • North Herd: April 6, 2024, at 6:00 am

Fall Roundup Information:

  • South Herd: September 20, 2024, at 4:30 pm
  • North Herd: September 21, 2024, at 6:00 am

These semi-annual roundups help ensure the well-being of the ponies and identify new foals born since the famous Pony Penning event in July.

On Friday afternoon, the South Herd is gathered by the Saltwater Cowboys. The ponies will remain in the corral overnight, providing ample opportunities for visitors to check out the ponies.

On Saturday morning, the Saltwater Cowboys will round up the Northern Herd. This typically takes five to six hours due to the larger number of ponies and the vast area to cover.

During these roundups, a veterinary team conducts comprehensive health checks on each pony. This includes administering vaccinations against West Nile and Equine Encephalitis, deworming, and examining hooves and teeth.

The Pony Swim has been set for July 24th.

For more information on the pony roundups you can got the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce website.
