SALISBURY, MD - The Office of the State Fire Marshal in Maryland is investigating a house fire that occurred on Christmas Day during which firefighters rescued multiple pets.

According to the Fire Marshal, the Fruitland Volunteer Fire Company was called to reports of a house fire on Coulbourn Mill Road in Salisbury just after 12 pm on December 25th. It took about an hour for the 60 firefighters to control the flames in the two-story home.

The Fire Marshal’s Office says firefighters rescued four dogs and a pet rabbit from the fire. Two of the dogs were taken to Pet’s ER in Salisbury and are expected to recover. A pet Umbrella Cockatoo bird and several fish unfortunately died in the fire.

Total loss from the fire is estimated at $400,000. The Fire Marshal’s Office says the fire began in the rear enclosed porch, though the cause is still under investigation.
