OCEAN CITY, Md. - Construction work began Sept. 18 on what's expected to be a month-long refurbishing project for the Route 50 bridge into Ocean City.
During the summertime, thousands of vehicles cross this bridge into and out of Ocean City each day. Sometimes, the draw bridge even gets stuck in the open position.
During the off-season, traffic is a little light but when the bridge is stuck vehicles tend to back up. Drivers hope the upcoming construction does not cause a similar problem.
Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) says the bridge will remain open during construction. But, drivers can expect single-lane closures from time to time.
Drivers like Brittany Graves worry about backups with the construction and single-lane closures.
"At least the traffic with multiple lanes can disperse but having just a single lane, it would just back up even more. When you're trying to get home during rush hour and peak season, it's not a good combination," says Graves.
SHA says any lane closures would be done during off-peak times.
Mayor Rick Meehan says the bridge only got stuck 1 or 2 times this year but the work is essential. He says, "The last thing we want is for the bridge to not operate. It's essential for people coming and going and also for emergency vehicles."
Jami Jodon says she has seen the drawbridge get stuck and welcomes the work. "When it's stuck, you don't know how long you're sitting there," says Jodon. She adds, "Even if it does cause some headaches, once it's done it will be well worth it."
Mayor Meehan says SHA purposely scheduled construction during the off-season. During the winter months, the state says it will also work with the Coast Guard to keep disruptions with boat traffic to a minimum.
It's estimated work will be finished by Spring 2025.
