HARRINGTON, Del.– Lake Forest School District officials say police are investigating after a student brought a gun to W.T. Chipman Middle School on Oct. 7.
Superintendent Dr. Steven Lucas's office says late in the school day Oct. 7, a student informed administrators their classmate may have an airsoft weapon.
Administrators immediately took the reported student to the school's front office and searched their belongings, finding an unloaded Glock handgun, according to a press release.
The superintendent's office says the student and weapon were turned over to appropriate authorities, with Harrington Police investigating the incident.
There is reportedly no evidence the firearm was discharged or used to threaten any member of the school community, but officials say they will not release additional details which could interfere with the investigation.
"We recognize that the presence of a firearm in a school is deeply concerning to our families, staff, and community. We are sharing the confirmed facts of this incident as promptly and transparently as possible while protecting student privacy and the integrity of the ongoing law enforcement investigation," the district said.
Officials commended the student who spoke up about the incident, reminding district community members that everyone has a role to play in keeping schools safe
