SUN Behavioral Hospital Opens in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Del.- After years of planning, the SUN Behavioral Delaware facility is open to serve Sussex County.

Hundreds were on hand for the mental health hospital's ribbon cutting in Georgetown on Monday afternoon, including elected officials from Sussex County and Gov. John Carney. The hospital will begin seeing patients at noon on Tuesday, offering customized treatment for those struggling with mental health issues or substance use disorders.

Delaware Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long says the psychiatric hospital's location is crucial.

"No one in Sussex should have to take two hours to drive north whether it be for anxiety, depression, or families suffering with addiction," she says. "I'm really proud of SUN because they are going to bring services to our adolescent population. It's much needed as well as mental health."

SUN Behavioral Delaware also has treatment plans for adults, children and seniors. The 90-bed hospital will also offer partial hospitalization and outpatient treatment.

"We are excited to be able to start taking new patients," CEO Amy Wood tells WBOC. "We are excited to serve the community and serve the family members, the patients and really just kick off meeting the needs of those who haven't been able to seek treatment."
