OCEAN CITY, MD- Ocean City is bidding a fond farewell to a K-9 who served the resort town for seven years.

The department announced K-9 Smoke is retiring from the force. He served as a dual-purpose patrol and narcotics alongside his partner, PFC Erika Rhode.

The Belgian Malinois came from the Netherlands in 2018 and was deployed more than 370 times. Smoke was apart of 278 vehicle scans, 49 building searches, 21 tactical deployments, 27 arrests, 8 weapons seizures, and helped seize $5,390.

They say he was a beloved member of the department family, frequently seen patrolling the hallway or kitchen in search of his next snack.

Officials say Smoke was injured during training in March 2024 and needed extensive surgery. Despite his resilience, the injury ultimately forced him into retirement.

OCPD has welcomed a new member to the team, K-9 Cido. Cido is a 15-month-old Belgian Malinois from Poland.

“Although Erika now partners with K-9 Cido, the love and respect we have for K-9 Smoke will never fade,” said Chief Raymond Austin. “Smoke was not only a faithful protector but a true friend to all in our department.”
