GEORGETOWN – The verdict of Randon Wilkerson this morning brought police officers from across Delmarva to the Sussex County Courthouse in a show of support for fallen Delmar Police Corporal Keith Heacook.

Delmar Police Chief Ivan Barkley shared that neighboring police departments have been incredibly supportive, providing constant aid, resources, and guidance both in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy and in the two years since.

Wicomico County officers responded the night of Corporal Keith Heacook's death, and have looked to give unwavering support since. Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis attended today, and said the police community will always be there to support each other.

“When someone dies in the line of duty it affects us all, this man was a public servant, served his community responding for a call to serve. I was proud to see all those people in the gallery, pews were full today, in support of the family.” said Lewis.

Lewis added that although he is relived at the guilty sentencing, there will never be a punishment equal to the death of an officer.

In a press conference following the trial, Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings said there's no way to truly repay those who serve in law enforcement but emphasized that they will always try.

"Each and everyday we work with law enforcement across our state. And each and everyday we see those acts of courage, we have to highlight those acts, we need to make sure the public knows that they have the best officers in our nation."  said Jennings.

She says law enforcement all have a common purpose, defending the defenseless.

"Heacooks sacrifice call that evening was just one, tragic, example of that service to others, where everyone else is running away and they are running towards the danger." added Jennings.
