BERLIN, Md.- Officials with the Assateague Island National Seashore said one of the park's stallions has been euthanized after it was hit by a car last week.

Park officials said Adriana's Yankee Prince was down in a salt marsh early Wednesday morning and wasn't able to stand.

The 2-year-old stallion was hit along Route 611 on Monday night of last week and the driver reported the incident. The horse suffered a swollen leg and a cut over his rib cage after that hit.

The loss follows two other horses being reported missing and presumed dead after Assateague's July census. That census is performed six times a year. Park officials said it can be difficult to find horses who are managed as wildlife, but that horses who are not accounted for in multiple census periods are presumed dead.

Currently, park officials said there are 78 horses: 20 stallions and 58 mares.
