DENTON, Md.- A volunteer fire company on Maryland's Eastern Shore has been awarded a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant for the 2018 fiscal year.
The Denton Volunteer Fire Company in Caroline County will be receiving $228,928.57 from the federal government. The money, along with 5% of company funding, will be used to replace the company's self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, according to the company. The SCBA is vital to firefighters when they encounter environments with smoke or anything of immediate danger to life or health.
The company says the current SCBA is at the end of its "useful life." They say the air cylinders can no longer be tested regularly because of its age. The grant will allow the fire company to buy 33 new sets of breathing apparatus and spare cylinders plus masks for riding members.
The Denton Volunteer Fire Company is a 100% volunteer organization, currently with 58 riding members and additional administrative personnel.
