CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Chesapeake College will be offering a welding class for English learners students this December.
"We want to to help those students who do not have a full grasp of the English language but are interested in welding and are qualified to work in the country. There are lots of positions that are just sitting open," explains Jason Mullen one of the organizers.
The university is partnering with David Willey's welding training center to provide the hands-on education.
"We're hoping to have up to 10 students for this class," says Willey who is an expert in welding. "If they want to learn even more they can choose to continue with an intermediate class after this basic course is completed," he adds.
"We'll have welding training on Sunday mornings for twelve weeks and on Mondays we will offer two hours of technical English," explains Mullen.
The course is free but students need to pay for the certification if they choose to pursue it. Classes are set to start the first week of December.
"This is short-term, introductory class that will provide the foundations for more formal education," the organizers say.
This is the second time the school offers the course. If you're interested in welding but do not need the ESL component Chesapeake College offers welding classes year round. Several organizations in the peninsula also offer classes and financial aid:
