Fisherman Contracts Rash at Cape Henlopen State Park

LEWES, Del.- The Point at Cape Henlopen State Park reopened Thursday after being closed for several months.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control closed a stretch of beach and dunes at the beginning of March to benefit more than 30 species of shorebirds during beachnesting season.

Piping plovers, least terns and oystercatchers nest on the upper portion of the beach between the hide tide line and the toe of the dunes and on large, flat areas known as "washover flats," which are created by storms. The flat areas with little or no vegetation are attractive to those species, since they provide direct access to the bay where waves are smaller and feeding is easier, DNREC said.

The bayside closure remains in effect until Oct. 1 for use by shorebirds migrating south for the winter.
