CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Dorchester County is chugging along with plans to bring a Rails to Trails to the county. It's been on the agenda for years, and now, county leaders say approval and possibly some work could begin within the year.
Blackwater Adventures owner Susan Meredith says more bike trails could bring her a lot more customers.
"I would say that in the first year it would definitely bring thousands of people," Meredith said.
The project would begin here at Cannery Park. The railroad tracks would be located inside the heart of Cambridge. Still, the project is just an idea. The state and county still must figure out how to turnover ownership before work begins.
Bill Christopher with the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce says it won't be easy but the project could pay off, attracting tourists and possible taxpayers to the area.
"Obviously, a Rails to Trails is not inexpensive," Christopher said. "But younger millennials, for example, really love Rails to Trails. That's the workforce that we're trying to recruit and keep in."
So far, the county is not sure how much the Rails to Trails project will cost.
