CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Authorities are searching for the cause of a fire that claimed the lives of 19 dogs at a Cambridge kennel.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office on Tuesday said the blaze happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. March 15 at an outbuilding used as a kennel by Goose Creek Outfitters & Retrievers LLC, located at 5520 Sand Road.
It took 20 firefighters from the Cambridge Rescue Vol. Fire Co. approximately 20 minutes to get the fire under control.
The fire caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to the structure and another $15,000 in damage to its contents. Nineteen Labrador retrievers/ Chesapeake retrievers being trained by the facility perished.
Deputy state fire marshals determined the fire started inside the 14-foot by 28-foot wood-framed structure. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
