WESTERN SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - Police say there's been a series of car break-ins in western Sussex county. Delaware State Police are looking for one man after making two arrests. Locals say there are even more cases and are calling for more safety.
Gary Schlosshauer in Bridgeville recalls the night he received an alert from his security cameras at 3:30 a.m. showing what appears to be a person trying to break into his car. Luckily, nothing was stolen, but he wants to prevent this from happening again.
"There's no need to try to take what we work so hard for. I just don't want to see it escalated to worse scenarios so lock your cars keep the garage doors closed you just never know," said Schlosshauer.
In Seaford, a resident shares with WRDE more surveillance camera footage that shows a person trying to get into a car at Lake Shores homes.
Seaford police say they've handled separate incidents and have seen an uptick of these cases this past year.
"A total of about 60-70 break-ins I handled. These are a group of juveniles going out at night time and they're doing 15-20 a night for 3 nights in a row before we caught them," explained Master Corporal Eric Chambers, public information officer, at Seaford Police Department.
Because of the increase in car break-ins, police advise residents to install security cameras in their homes, as it will help them with the investigations.
Delaware State Police announced Wednesday they arrested Amyah Deshields and Jaquan Adkins for allegedly stealing credit cards, money, GPS systems, and even a bicycle from the Sandy Ridge Mobile Home Park, Clearbrook Estates Development, and the Elks Road area in Seaford.
But police are still searching for another man they say was involved, Wilbur Doughty.
Residents in the area say they hope to see an end to all of this.
"I don't like this...this is considered a pretty safe neighborhood. I think more awareness that they're (police) keeping an eye on things would be useful," said Margaret Rivers, a Bridgeville resident.
Police are asking anyone who may have been a victim in one of these theft incidents and has not reported it yet to contact Detective Robert Mitchell with Delaware State Police Troop 4 Property Crimes by calling 302-752-3794.
