Smyrna Man Charged with Threatening Driver With Gun in Road Rage Incident

SMYRNA, Del.- Authorities say a Smyrna man has been charged in connection with a road rage incident that happened Tuesday on DuPont Highway.

Delaware State Police say the incident happened around 11:30 a.m., when a 25-year-old woman reported she had been the target of road rage in the area of Garrison Lake in Smyrna.

The victim reported that while she was traveling southbound on DuPont Highway in the left lane, she saw a black Ford Escape trying to switch into her lane.

Due to traffic, the victim said she was unable to move out of the vehicle’s way, which seemed to aggravate the male driver.

Troopers said that when the victim looked at the driver, he reportedly proceeded to give her the middle finger, then displayed what appeared to be a black handgun in his left hand and pointed it at her.

The woman was able to make a left turn in the center median to go in the opposite direction.

Troopers identified the driver of the Ford Escape as William E. Draper Jr., 22, of Smyrna.

Troopers found Draper in the parking lot of Royal Farms in Cheswold, where they said they recovered a loaded black Glock 22, semi-automatic handgun from Draper's vehicle.

Draper was taken into custody without incident and transported back to Troop 9 where he was charged with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony and aggravated menacing.

Draper was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and released on $6,000 unsecured bond.
