SALISBURY, Md. -- Breast cancer survivors, health officials, and the community gathered at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center Wednesday for Peninsula Regional Medical Center's 14th Annual Breast Cancer Conference.
Hospital officials say more than 100 breast cancer survivors attended the conference. According to PRMC, this year's meeting focused on genetics, with Mercy Medical Center genetic counselor Ashley Low speaking about the different types of genetic tests and what exactly they do.
The conference also featured survivor Katya Lezin, who shared her experience with genetic testing. Lezin said that her genetic testing revealed an 87% risk of breast cancer after having ovarian cancer. She said that testing helped her take steps to prevent getting breast cancer.
Surgeons Dr. David Walker and Dr. David Sechler of the Peninsula Breast Center also spoke at the conference on genetic testing-related topics.
The conference is held in partnership with the Susan G. Komen Maryland organization. PRMC says the annual conferences help educate others about the advances in breast cancer treatment and survival.
