SALISBURY, Md. - If you or someone you know has some gently used clothes or household items you don't need anymore ,The Eastern Shore's Salvation Army could use your help. The charitable organization tells WRDE what they are in need of and how the funds contribute to the community.
The Salvation Army thrift store in Salisbury is celebrating that they have been serving the Eastern Shore for over 100 years. However, they are hoping to increase donations as they try to recover from the pandemic.
The store fully operates thanks to its loyal donors. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were forced to close last year leaving them with fewer than normal donations.
"We actually had to shut down the thrift store for the entire month of April in 2020 so that really hurt us in terms of being able to get revenue to be able to put back into our programs it really hurt us in our thrift store operations," said Capt. Matt Trantham.
Overcoming the challenges of limited store hours and fewer people shopping. But now fully open, they are hopeful they can get things back to how they were.
The thrift store is happy to receive a variety of things like adult-sized clothes, kids clothes, kitchenware, and furniture, but remind donators that broken items cannot be accepted.
"If something is broken or unable to be used then that in turn goes in the trash and we have to recycle and have to get rid of things that are unable to be sold in that way after we've discounted them as much as possible," added Trantham.
Assuring that one small donation can go a long way.
"The money that we get in turn after we cover our costs goes right back into the community to help make a difference whether its sports programs, senior programs, after school programs," explained Trantham.
