Vacations Cut Short, Wallops Hunkers Down Anticipating Hurricane Effects

As Hurricane Florence barrels toward the Carolinas, people on Delmarva are preparing for any potential effects the storm may bring to the peninsula.

That is forcing Wallops Island Flight Facility to take precautions, and tourists to shorten their vacations.

Although there are no launches scheduled for the rest of the week at the Wallops Flight Facility near Chiconteague, Virginia, the heavy rains and potential flooding expected there mean the facilities storm plan will be implemented.

"We have folks look around their buildings and secure anything that might be a flying object. We look at construction sites that are going to make sure those are cleaned up", said Keith Koehler, Wallops Island Flight Facility.

And a high priority would be to secure any rockets and planes that might be exposed to the weather.

"If we had any launches, rockets on the pad we would move those off. If we had airplanes out, we would put them in hangers, those types of things," said Koehler.

Plenty of people were on the beach at Chincoteague Tuesday, trying to enjoy what is left of late summer vacations. Most said they are headed home early.

"I think we will leave tomorrow, because we don't want to take that chance. I would advise people, they tell you to get out, get out," said Richard Upholster, Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Emergency services in Chincoteague will open two shelters in case of evacuations for locals on the island.

The shelters are located in Arcadia High School and Middle School. EMS officials say they will be open Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m.

Officials are keeping residents updated through the town's Facebook page.

All non-residents of Chincoteague are required to evacuate starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
