Maryland Department of Agriculture Begins Aerial Spraying to Control Increasing Mosquito Populations

EASTERN SHORE, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Mosquito Control Section has announced larvicide operations on freshwater woodland areas in Dorchester, Somerset, and Worcester Counties beginning today.

The Department of Agriculture says neighbors can expect to see a twin engine white plane with red and blue stripes flying overhead spreading the larvicide on April 15th.

About 3,800 acres of woodland areas near Cambridge are slated for treatment Monday. In Somerset, freshwater flooded woodland areas near Dames Quarter and Fairmount are targeted for application, according to Mosquito Control. Nearly 800 acres along Rt. 611 in Worcester County will also see treatment.

The Department of Agriculture says the areas will be treated with bacillus thuringiensis, a biological treatment aimed at killing mosquito larvae before they can develop into adults.
