OCEAN CITY, Md. - Surfers can take advantage of all of Ocean City's beaches Monday after the Ocean City Beach Patrol temporarily modified its surfing restrictions.

According to an announcement from the Town of Ocean City, the change applies only to Monday, Aug. 24, and allows surfing along the entire Ocean City shoreline.

Beach Patrol officials say swimmers still have the right of way. Surfers must remain at least 50 yards away from the nearest swimmer or non-surfer. If that distance cannot be maintained, surfers must move to another area or stop surfing.

Surfers are also required to wear a leash at all times.

The temporary change does not apply to other types of watercraft. Skimboards, kite surfers, windsurfers, and kayaks remain prohibited, according to officials. Stand-up paddleboards with paddles are also not permitted at this time.

The Beach Patrol did not specify in Monday's announcement what prompted the temporary modification.
