Chacoan Peccaries

Salisbury Zoo

SALISBURY, Md.- The Salisbury Zoo is planning a birthday celebration for its Chacoan peccaries on Sunday, May 17.

The Zoo says the big bash runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Visitors can stop by the peccaries' habitat across from Holly Circle for special enrichment demonstrations, conservation support, and singing "Happy Birthday" at 2 p.m.

Zoo officials announced the arrival of these distant pig relatives in Dec. 2025. Officials say it is the first time the endangered species has been seen in the Zoo's animal collection.

They are native to the South American Gran Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. The herd at the Salisbury Zoo is part of a cooperative species-management effort.
