Carney Says Delaware Schools Likely to Remain Shut for Academic Year

WILMINGTON, Del. --- Gov. John Carney on Friday said organizers of protests in Delaware over the death of George Floyd are looking for meaningful change but also called for demonstrations to remain peaceful.

During his twice weekly coronavirus press briefing, Carney spoke with organizers of a major protest Friday night in Wilmington and said they want to see significant actions taken on issues involving police use of force, racism, and inequities for black men and women.

The governor said it's up to him and elected leaders to act.

"The proof will be in the pudding and talk is cheap. Listening is important," he said.

Carney said he did have concerns about protests becoming violent and urged demonstrators to keep demonstrations peaceful.

"People say 'well, why are you why you trying to stop protests?'" he said. "I'm not trying to stop protests. I'm trying to avoid what can happen when protests get out of control."
