LEWES, Del.- The City of Lewes has extended its mask requirement until Delaware Gov. John Carney lifts the mask requirement statewide, city officials said Tuesday. The mask requirement, which has been in effect since early July, applies to the downtown area bounded by Savannah Road, Market Street, Third Street, and the canal, as well as the drawbridge and beach parking lots and restrooms.
"We have seen strong compliance with the requirement so far, and we believe it is important for our residents and visitors to feel safe in areas of town where social distancing is difficult to achieve," said Lewes City Manager Ann Marie Townshend.
And in related news, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce said its “Restarting Lewes’s Economy” committee, working with the City of Lewes, has been meeting virtually since early May to develop initiatives that would message the community that Lewes businesses are open and it’s safe to visit them.
The chamber said the group’s latest project is designed to reinforce the safety aspects of visiting our businesses.
The “Lewes Loves Masks” contest will encourage people to come to Lewes and snap a photo of themselves with masks on. Creativity and humor will be rewarded. To be entered into the contest, entrants need to post their photos on Instagram with the hashtag #LewesLovesMasks. All posts have to be public. Each month through December has a different mask theme. The monthly winner will receive a $50 gift card from a Lewes area business. The Lewes Chamber will “like” your post to let you know that you are entered.
September: Most Creative Mask - Most creative mask or scene
October: Team Pride - Show off your favorite team or sport
November: Family - Best pic of all family members in mask

The committee developed a new marketing campaign - “Love, Lewes”- that included the creation of an original logo. New street banners were fabricated with the image and installed in the historic business district and along Savannah Road on the beach side of Lewes. Yard signs with the image were made and have been for sale since Memorial Day weekend. To date, more than 450 yard signs have been purchased and can be seen throughout Lewes.
