During each event, cyclists can receive basic bike repairs, tire pressure checks and seat and/or handlebar adjustments. A DelDOT mechanic will also be on site to complete major repairs and install bicycle lights. Bicycle helmets will also be available free of charge.
In addition to providing cyclists with proper safety equipment, DelDOT's goal is to build awareness of local traffic laws and to educate riders.
DelDOT Director of Community Relations C.R. McLoud said this program had been successful in the past and he is hopeful the program will continue to be beneficial in the future.
"The goal is to make sure bicyclist have the right equipment," said McLoud. "Free bike inspections, repairs, if you need a new helmet, get a new helmet. Also have some lightening that we are installing on bikes and materials. Whether your someone who is riding everyday or some who is riding recreationally, it is really a great opportunity to come out get your bike inspected and get up to speed on what the latest rules are."
Over the years. DelDOT has partnered with the group, Sussex Cyclists to help promote bicycle safety in the Rehoboth Beach and Lewes area. President of Sussex Cyclists, John Kurpjuweit, wanted to remind all cyclists the importance of obeying traffic laws and to always be properly equipped when riding.
"Wear a helmet," said Kurpjuweit. "Be aware of your surroundings. Wear bright clothing. Put a mirror on the bike. Put flashing lights on the bike."
