SELBYVILLE, Del.- Services have been announced for a member of the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Department who was killed last week while rendering aid to people involved in a car crash.
According to the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association, Laura Madara, 56, will be given a full fire department service with all the honor, respect and tributes appropriately bestowed upon her as a member of the fire service community.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 17, from 3-6 p.m. at the Selbyville Fire Company, Station 88, 30 North Main St., Selbyville, DE.
Funeral Service will be Sunday, April 18, at 1 p.m. at the Selbyville Fire Company, Station 88. There will be visitation prior to the service from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Burial will be at the Selbyville Redman’s Cemetery on Cemetery Road in Selbyville, following the funeral service. All participants in the services at the cemetery will walk from the Selbyville Fire Station the few blocks to the cemetery. After the casket is carried from the fire station to the hearse for the salute, all uniformed personnel will form up behind the pipes and drums bands and proceed to the cemetery.
Delaware State Police said that at around 1 p.m. Friday, April 9, a Ford F-250 Selbyville Fire Police pickup truck was on Polly Branch Road with its emergency equipment activated.
Police said the truck was used for traffic control while on scene of another crash.
Troopers say as the scene cleared, the 79-year-old driver of the truck reversed. Police said Madara, a fire police officer with the fire department who was assisting people involved in a crash, was standing in back of the pickup when she was struck and killed. The crash remains under investigation by police.
The fire department said that in addition to assisting the department with traffic control during fire calls, Madara served as president of the ladies auxiliary.
