REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Police say three teens were injured - one seriously - in a Sunday night industrial accident at Funland on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk.
Rehoboth Beach police said it happened at around 7:45 p.m. in the area of the amusement park's Super Flip 360 ride. Two girls, ages 14 and 15, respectively, were found injured, along with a 16-year-old boy.
The girls were transported by ambulance to Beebe Health Campus and later released. The boy was flown to Christiana Care where he remains in serious condition.
The incident remains under investigation. However, police said initial efforts have determined that the injuries resulted from the teens being struck by debris caused by an air storage tank failure.
Sunday night was Funland's final night of seasonal operation for 2021. The amusement park will reopen next May.
Funland released a statement to the public that stated, "First and foremost, our thoughts are with those guests, and their families, for a full recovery. Two guests were taken to the local hospital and later released and one was transferred to a hospital in Wilmington. "
"We are actively investigating this incident, working with local authorities and industry professionals, and we cannot release any further information at this time. For over 60 years, safety for our guests and our employees has always been our top priority and will continue to be our focus as we move forward."
WBOC spoke with Virginia Wilkerson who said she was a family friend of the 16-year-old boy who was struck.
"We came here today to talk with someone here about what happened yesterday," Wilkerson said. "Her son was involved in the accident inside with a gas tank that exploded."
Wilkerson and the family walked around the boardwalk trying to find out more information about the incident.
"The only thing she knows is that her son was flown by a helicopter to the hospital and we come here today, but its closed and now we don't know who to talk to," Wilkerson said.
Wilkerson said the injured 16-year-old underwent surgery and is expected to return home sometime this week.
