83% of Wicomico Teachers Are Opting-In to COVID Vaccine

SALISBURY, Md.- Wicomico County Public Schools will not require its teachers and staff get COVID vaccines before returning to work, but they must return to work and they do have a choice whether to get a vaccine or not.

Teachers are all part of Maryland's COVID-19 Phase 1B vaccine eligible population.

Superintendent Dr. Donna Hanlin says 83% of Wicomico County's teachers have decided to get the vaccine. Of those 83%, 98.9% have either already received their second shot or have it scheduled.

Dr. Hanlin says the remaining number of teacher's have the right to their choices, but that it's at a good number.

"We have about 17% - and that's remained pretty consistent -- who do not choose to have the vaccine at this point. so I believe we're in good shape in terms of the teachers and the vaccine," said Dr. Hanlin Thursday.

Dr. Hanlin says Wicomico County Public Schools plan to resume in-person learning five days a week in the fall at the latest.
