WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.- The Wicomico County Health Department is warning people in Salisbury after a bat tested positive for rabies on Wednesday.
Authorities say the bat was spotted near North Nithsdale Drive, Salisbury. The Health Department is asking people to be aware of their surroundings and avoid contact with stray or wild animals.
To prevent the spread of rabies, the Wicomico County Health Department says keep your dogs and cats confined, teach your children to leave animals alone, and vaccine your pets. Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats, and ferrets, 4 months of age and older have a current rabies vaccination.
People can also avoid giving pets food or water outside and should make sure all garbage lids are secured.
To report human or animal contact, such as bites or scratches, call the Wicomico County Health Department at (410) 546-4446.
