Blood Bank of Delmarva Celebrates 65 Years of Service

SALISBURY, Md. - The Blood Bank of Delmarva says it's in need of donors after supplies dipped dangerously low. The demand for blood is rising as life tries to return to some sort of new normal.

"We're slowly but surely getting there. We still have a great need," Tony Prado, communications specialist for the blood bank, says. The Blood Bank of Delmarva recently

issued a plea for donors

after supplies dropped below its seven-day reserves. Prado says they started to receive more orders as states began the first phases of reopening and hospitals started to get back to normal operations. "You always hear about the need for blood for emergencies and traumas and people getting transfusions because they've had a bad car accident or something like that. And that had slowed down, obviously with a lot of people sheltering in place. But a big part of what we do is provide blood for what are called elective surgeries," Prado says. "It's very common for people to need blood."  The blood bank remained open to appointments over the last two months. However, they are now accepting occasional walk-ins. Additionally, one of their biggest sources of supply is making a return.  "I think normalcy is the world of the week for me because blood drives are 40% of our collections usually and the fact that they're coming back is exciting," Prado says. Prado adds that they've received a good response to their call for help so far. But, he adds there's always more to be done. "The added strain of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge as well but we're getting through it," Prado says. "And as I said, it's because people have intended to step up here on Delmarva and do their part and we really thank them for that." People who want to donate should give the blood bank a call or go online to schedule an appointment. In partnership with a couple of other agencies, they launched the #SleevesUpMD blood drive and campaign to raise 150 pledges for blood donations. More details can be found
