SALISBURY, Md. - Harkins Builders is scheduled to break ground on Aug. 15 off Merritt Mill Road in Salisbury.
The company is planning on developing 75 residential units for low income families. There will be eight three-story buildings once it's all complete, which will take up to a year.
People in the area have mixed feelings about the new apartments. Some people like business owners are excited about the potential it will bring, but some neighbors aren't too happy.
Mauna Amin owns the Food Mart on Old Ocean City Road.
She is looking forward to new customers.
"It is going to give us more business over here," Amin said. "We have a deli, wine, beer, cigarettes, groceries and we are going to get more business."
People like Lorraine Payne who live on Merritt Mill said she is concerned for her antique business because of the traffic congestion it will bring.
"I'm concerned about being able to get out of my driveway, we have a lot of older customers that come here and with all the traffic they won't be able to get in and out of here," Payne said.
Another neighbor Phyllis Carter has lived in the area for 42 years. She isn't too excited that the complex will be her new view, instead of an empty field.
"I don't think we need any more apartments in this same location, they are all the way around almost now anyway," Carter said.
However, the complex is on its way. So far construction costs are roughly $13.5 million.
