ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Beach traffic is expected to reach record high volumes this Fourth of July holiday weekend, especially at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
The forecast is calling for chances of rain and some thunderstorms from Thursday to Saturday. Two-way traffic is currently in effect on the bridge, but two-way traffic is prohibited during bridge wind warnings, fog or times of precipitation, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.
With the chance of inclement weather, the disruption of the two-way traffic pattern will increase the likelihood of major delays eastbound during the peak hours, MDTA said.
This summer already, there has been record high traffic volumes at the Bay Bridge when compared to the same weekends in previous years.
MDTA advises travelers to leave during off peak hours, such as early in the morning or late at night. Traveling during off peak times to the Eastern shore can help reduce traffic congestion on the bridge.
MDTA suggests the best times to travel the Bay Bridge this holiday weekend includes:
- – before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
- – before 6 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
