OCEAN CITY, Md.- The town of Ocean City is one step away from clamping down on people who are too loud on the boardwalk.
Mayor Rick Meehan says a new study found the allowable noise threshold for the boardwalk area to be about the equivalent of a car driving 65 miles per hour.
The new noise threshold would allow officers to enforce and prosecute those who are too loud. That includes street performers, partygoers and large crowds.
Mayor Meehan says the decision was made after a recent federal court hearing found the town did not have the right to enforce such a law because there was no actual limit on what could be deemed too loud.
The town is now taking the next steps to pass an enforceable noise ordinance.
"We needed to have a base level... where we could allow people the rights that they have to express themselves and to certainly be heard, but not at the detriment of everybody else," said Mayor Rick Meehan.
The mayor says the next step is for the noise ordinance proposal to go before the town council.
