ANNAPOLIS, Md.- As expected, President Donald Trump and Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden won their respective presidential primaries Tuesday in Maryland.

As of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Republican Trump had 88.2% compared to 11.8% for former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld. Trump secured the Republican presidential nomination in March.

On the Democratic side, former Vice President Biden had 85.3%.   His nearest challenger is Bernie Sanders. Sanders dropped out of the race earlier in the spring.

All of the results are unofficial.

The state of Maryland took the unusual step this year of sending mail-in ballots to every registered voter in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. This was intended to keep in-person voting to a minimum. Only select voting booths were available across the state.

Voters had until midnight Tuesday to postmark there ballots, and it is unclear how long it will take election officials to tabulate those ballots.

Biden scored a clean sweep of the seven states conducting Democratic presidential primaries on Tuesday, not at all a surprise given that the presumptive Democratic nominee has no active opposition.

Yet the delegate haul is important to Biden’s goal of gaining enough delegates to claim the Democratic nomination before the party’s summer convention.

Tuesday’s results may leave Biden just short of the 1,991 delegates he needs, but primaries next week in Georgia and West Virginia could put him over the top.

Of Tuesday’s elections, Pennsylvania’s could add the most delegates to Biden’s count. He also won contests in Indiana, Rhode Island, New Mexico, Montana and South Dakota.

In the District 1 congressional primary, incumbent Republican Andy Harris was leading with 81.6% of the vote versus challenger Jorge Delgado's 18.4%

In the Democratic primary, Allison Galbraith held a slim 1% lead over Mia Mason. Galbraith had 40.9% to Mason's 39.7%. Jennifer Pingley had 19.3%.

It is unclear what percentage of voted had been counted by 11:30 pm Tuesday.
