TASLEY, Va.- If you live on the Eastern Shore, it's likely you're familiar with a string of arson fires that targeted abandoned buildings during 2012 and 2013 in Accomack County, Va.
One of the 80 or so fires that occurred on the shore include one that happened at the Whispering Pines Motel in Tasley.
These fires were set by arsonists Tonya Bundick and Charles Smith. Both were convicted for a share of these fires, but it's left a multitude of abandoned buildings scorched, and in bad shape.
Over time, structures like the Whispering Pines Motel in Tasley have continued to deteriorate. Now, Accomack County officials have deemed what's left of this property dangerous.
People in the area couldn't agree more.
Stacey Carpenter said, "I am going past it daily for work and I am tired of looking at it. It's an eyesore; it's dangerous and people are getting hurt there."
Others like Edgar Allen said the motel is historic to the area, and he's even had aunts who've worked at the motel in past.
But even though the hotel has history, Allen says it is not worth preserving.
"It's an eyesore. I hope they tear it down and build something useful there."
The county is now conducting a "Scope of Work" analysis to see what measures must be taken before possible demolition.
They've also extended bids to qualified contractors who may spearhead the demolition process.
The county says it's unclear how much the demolition of Whispering Pines Motel will cost at the moment, but they hope to determine that by the time all the bids are received.
They also expect to award a potential bid by the end of March, after they abate dangerous structures on the property, and all plans from the private property owner are known.
