SALISBURY, MD - A 68-year-old Somerset County man has been sentenced to the maximum possible sentence of 35 years behind bars in Wicomico County for the sexual abuse of a minor in 2022.
According to the office of the State’s Attorney for Wicomico County, James Hayman, 68, pleaded guilty in July to Sexual Abuse of a Minor and Sexual Offense in the Third Degree. Hayman sexually abused a child under 13 who was in his care in December 2022.
Hayman was sentenced last Thursday, September 22nd, by Judge S. James Sarbanes. He will be registered as a Tier III Sex Offender for life, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.
“There is a trust that is exploited, and broken, anytime a minor is sexually abused,” said Wicomico County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Dykes. “Its long-lasting effects are then carried by the survivors throughout their lives. These heinous crimes will never be tolerated in Wicomico County, and will be relentlessly investigated and prosecuted so that justice is done. I hope that the maximum sentence imposed by the Court in this case affords solace and healing to the survivor.”
