Somerset Superintendent John Gaddis

SOMERSET CO., MD - Somerset County Public Schools’ (SCPS) Superintendent John Gaddis has announced his retirement after 11 years with the County School System.

According to SCPS, Gaddis made the announcement at a Board of Education meeting on November 14th.

“The time to retire has arrived, and I am excited for the future in terms of my family, but also for the school system,” Gaddis wrote to faculty and staff. “As the Board progresses in their search for a new superintendent, I encourage you to take the opportunity to become involved and to advocate for the children of Somerset County.”

SCPS says Gaddis has served 35 years in public education, with over a decade of that time serving students and teachers of Somerset County. He was previously the superintendent for instruction in Worcester County before serving three terms in Somerset, SCPS says.

“We appreciate the longevity of service and the stability Dr. Gaddis provided to the SCPS school community through many challenging times, and we wish him the best in retirement and his future endeavors,” Board of Education Chairperson Bill McInturff said. “The Somerset Board of Education will immediately begin the process to search for his successor as the next superintendent of schools. We encourage the Somerset County Public Schools community to participate in our superintendent search through attending our public meetings and providing feedback through each step in the process.”

Gaddis’ retirement will be effective June 30th, according to Somerset County Public Schools.
