MARYLAND - Beginning Oct. 1, vehicles with out-of-state license plates could face daily fines or even towing, impoundment, and/or booting in Maryland, according to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.
The MMVA says vehicles with out-of-state tags will be given a written warning, with the Maryland owner having 60 days to change their plates or apply for proper exemptions.
After 60 days, officials say the owner will be fined seven dollars a day for up to 60 days. If the vehicle is still not properly registered 120 days after the written notice, officials say local jurisdictions can bring civil action against the owner, including towing, impoundment, and/or booting.
In 2025, a MDOT report said Maryland loses around 8 to 12 million dollars a year in registration fees due to Virginia vehicle owners having a listed Maryland address.
