MILLVILLE, DE -- The town of Millville has become the latest Sussex County Town to pass an ordinance on the sale of marijuana. Millville Town Council voted 4-0, and one member abstaining, on the ban of growing and selling cannabis within town limits.
Mayor Ronald Belinko tells us it isn’t based on the prevention of smoking, but on the limited financial benefits the town would receive from allowing it. He says under current state legislation, the town receives no revenue from the sale.
Zoe Patchel, President of Delaware Cannabis Advocacy Network says sale restrictions only make things worse.
“They still would be making money if they allowed these businesses. They have property taxes, you have income taxes, and you have people coming to the town that would stimulate the local economy." said Patchel.
The Mayor added that another primary factor was their relation with other coastal towns.
With Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach already banning sale – they did not want what they describe as a family friendly town to become the center for purchasing weed in the region.
