WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. - Students across Wicomico County returned to the classroom Tuesday for the first day of the new school year.
Wicomico County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Micah Stauffer joined members of the county and state school boards, along with Maryland State Senator Mary Beth Carozza, in visiting several schools as students and staff settled back into their routines.
One of the stops was Pinehurst Elementary School, where Principal Alexan Dargan said having local and state education leaders in the building on the first day sends an important message to both students and staff.
"It feels amazing to have their support, not only financially, but just them stepping foot in our school to see all the great things that are happening here within our community here at Pinehurst,” Dargan said. “The kids are super excited to see them, you know, to see their smiling faces, to know that they are loved and cared about, not only from their staff here at Pinehurst, but from the outside too."
The group also visited Prince Street Elementary, Glen Avenue Elementary, Fruitland Intermediate, Bennett Middle, and Fruitland Primary schools Tuesday.
Wicomico County Public Schools Chief Academic Officer Dr. Rick Briggs also spent the first day visiting schools across the district. His stops included Delmar Elementary, Mardela Middle and High School, Northwestern Elementary, Westside Intermediate, Westside Primary, Pemberton Elementary, and Salisbury Middle School.
The visits came as buses returned to the roads and thousands of Wicomico County students began another school year.
