The Archdiocese of New York and attorneys for about 1,300 parishioners who say they were sexually abused by clergy have agreed to an $800 million settlement of their legal claims. It is the second-largest involving a Catholic archdiocese in the U.S., following a 2024 settlement of $880 million involving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. New York Archbishop Ronald Hicks sent an email Saturday to clergy confirming the settlement after attorneys for the survivors of alleged abuse announced it. Abuse survivor attorney Jeff Anderson said the settlement represents a powerful moment in the pursuit of justice. Hicks said in his email that the settlement will bring healing and reconciliation.
British police confirm they passed a letter about alleged offenses by Meghan Markle's father to her in 2019. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, says she's "deeply distressed" by allegations that child sexual abuse images were found at her father Thomas Markle Sr.'s former home in the Philippines. Her brother reportedly discovered the images while clearing the property. Meghan refers to a letter with "troubling allegations" sent to British police, which shared its contents with her. The police are reviewing their handling of the matter. Thomas Markle Sr. denies the allegations. Investigations are ongoing in the Philippines and the U.S.
New Mexico’s attorney general has filed a lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein’s attorney and accountant. The lawsuit accuses them of concealing Epstein's sex trafficking operation. It also seeks to stop them from accepting any payments from the disgraced financier’s estate. Attorney General Raul Torrez accused Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn of being aware of sexual abuse of girls and young women at Epstein’s Zorro Ranch near Santa Fe. Indyke worked as Epstein’s attorney for roughly two decades. Both he and Kahn have testified in a congressional committee that they did not know about Epstein’s abuse.
The former leader of Northern Ireland’s largest unionist party has been on Thursday to 15 years in prison for the rape and sex abuse of two girls decades ago. The 63-year-old Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted in June of one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency and 13 indecent assault charges involving two girls between 1985 and 2008. He had denied the charges. Donaldson led the Democratic Unionist Party. The DUP is the biggest party in favor of keeping Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom. He resigned as leader of the conservative DUP and gave up his seat in the House of Commons after his arrest two years ago. He was sentenced on Thursday.
A wave of solidarity has surged on social media in support of a young woman who is suing Cornell University and seven fraternity members she accuses of raping her. Countless women and some men are identifying themselves online as Jane Doe, the name the Cornell woman is using in her lawsuit. Many are sharing their own experiences of sexual abuse, reminiscent of the #MeToo movement's peak. The impetus for some is also a desire to offer the woman some protection in this digital age, in response to those wanting to identify her real name online. They hope the flood of “I am Jane Doe” posts will confuse online algorithms.
A woman who says she was gang-raped at Cornell University testified at a campus hearing that she “felt like bait” as the attackers were “like lions around me.” This is according to newly released records from the school’s disciplinary investigation. Details of the alleged attack first emerged from a lawsuit filed by the woman, identified only as Jane Doe. Heavily redacted Title IX documents show conflicting reports of what happened at the Chi Phi fraternity party in October 2024. The documents are part of a separate lawsuit involving one of the accused men looking to overturn his punishment.

The owner and operator of Eastern Shore Cheer Academy in Stevensville is facing multiple charges including the second-degree rape of a 9-year-old girl.
Police say they responded to the 300 block of Old Landing Road around 12 a.m. for a report of a sexual assault. Officers made contact with the victim, who said they had just been assaulted at that location. They say that critical evidence was able to be collected right away thanks to the victim's immediate report of the incident.
