Brandywine Valley SPCA Rescues Hurricane Florence Pets

GEORGETOWN, Del.- After roughly 230 dogs and cats were rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence by the Brandywine Valley SPCA, more than half are still looking for their forever home.

Brandywine Valley SPCA Delaware Director Walter Fenstermacher says the remaining dogs and cats will be placed throughout the SPCA's shelters in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Anyone interested in adopting them can take them home the same day, if they're a right fit.

"If folks are interested in adopting they just need to bring their ID and their family," Fenstermacher explains. "Their children--two legged and four legged--[should come] to meet the new pet and make sure everybody gets along."

Fenstermacher says it's fulfilling knowing so many animals have been adopted already. The dogs and cats came from shelters impacted by Hurricane Florence. By taking the animals, the BVSPCA says it leaves open space for pets lost during mandatory evacuations and simultaneously gives the pets a new lease on life.

"It's really awesome to know that we are saving the lives that were at risk in the hurricanes, that were at risk in their own shelters," Fenstermacher says. "Really, to be able to save those lives is a great thing."
