Berlin Opens "Little Free Library" Founded by Second Grader

BERLIN, Md. -- A new library recently opened at a park in Worcester County. The park's founder? A second grader.

At Henry Park in Berlin, seven-year old Ellie Zollinger got permission from the town's Parks Commission to open a "Little Free Library" for kids in the area.

Town Administrator Laura Allen says the town has been supportive of Zollinger's request to open the free library and they're collecting children's book donations at town hall.

Allen says Zollinger was inspired after seeing a Little Free Library at the Salisbury Zoo once. But Allen also says something else inspired the second grader to give back to her community.

"She wanted to do one for her neighbors here in Berlin and in Henry Park for kids that she felt were a little less advantaged than she was, didn't have access to some of the books that she had access to," said the town administrator.

Allen says Zollinger has committed to look after the Little Free Library in Henry Park until she graduates from high school in Worcester County.
