Dead Horseshoe Crabs Causing Terrible Sight and Smell in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. - In the past month, dead horseshoe crabs have been piling up at the Canals Bayside. As the temperature is rising, the smell is getting worse.

People who live around 93rd street are eager to find a solution to this problem fast, as the lifeless crabs can be seen from their backyards.

"We have loads of them here, and they're all expired, and they smell really bad," says a resident.

The smell is covering neighborhoods. We spoke with a visitor in Ocean City who says that this is something he did not expect or want on his vacation.

"The smell is pretty strong. As a guest in Ocean City, it's shocking to see and I'm interested in understanding why it happened," says Nicholas Granger, a tourist. "I feel bad for the residents that have to live right next to it."

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources tells us this occasionally occurs when horseshoe crabs spawn. They can get stuck in an area and die off from low oxygen or high water temperatures.

The crabs have not yet been removed. We're told by residents that many phone calls have been made to the city. However, they told us that they have not received a response.
