GEORGETOWN, Del. - One day after multiple people expressed their concerns over new stop signs in Georgetown, DelDOT has added new safety features.
On Thursday, many people said the addition of two stop signs to Springfield Road and Gravel Hill Road is a welcome change, but that more warning is needed for the stop signs, as drivers have become accustomed to a two-way stop for a number of years. On Friday, DelDOT added red flashing lights above those stop signs, and shortened them as well, per constituents' requests. James Wilson owns Wilson's General Store at the intersection and says it's a great relief.
"I'm glad of it. We need lights up here," he says. "People are not paying attention, not used to it and so they run it."
DelDOT's changes come just one day after Delaware State Police say an accident occurred at that intersection because someone ran a stop sign. According to police, the intersection has seen 19 crashes since 2012.
DelDOT says the flashing lights are solar-powered and will remain up for at least 3 months. After that, their need will be re-assessed.
