PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - A fire Wednesday morning in Princess Anne is believed to have been started by an electrical malfunction.
Firefighters from the Princess Anne and Crisfield fire companies responded to a two-story apartment building on Beckford Avenue around 11 a-m Wednesday.
The State Fire Marshal's office said the preliminary cause is accidental from an electrical malfunction. Firefighters on the scene said the apartment building, owned by Butler Rentals, is older, so firestops that most homes have today, was not present in the apartment. Firefighters said the fire started inside the wall behind the mirror in a second-floor bathroom.
Andre Dennis was home when he said he heard a loud, "Pow, Pow!"
"I was really scared because I didn't know what it was," Dennis said. "There was a loud boom, and I didn't know where it came from. It sounded like somebody hitting the house or something."
Two other people who live in the apartment were not home at the time. No injuries were reported, but firefighters on the scene said that one firefighter was taken to PRMC for heat exhaustion.
The damages were estimated by the Fire Marshal's Office as $21,500. The Red Cross is helping those who lived at the apartment, according to the State Fire Marshal.
