Capt. Steve Moore captured the whale shark swimming past the boat in the below video. Whale sharks, are the largest known fish species and can reach lengths of up to 40 feet. The slow-moving filter-feeding fish are very rare off the mid-Atlantic coast.
Moore's video has received more than 841,000 views on Facebook since it was posted June 27.

Another encounter with a whale shark was caught on video off the coast of Ocean City.
The hosts of "Hooked on OC" were on board the "Moore Bills" on the Fourth of July while filming their fishing show when a whale shark unexpectedly arrived. That's when a couple members of the crew jumped in to get an up-close look, even touching the fish they described as "beautiful" and "peaceful."
The video, which can be viewed below, was posted to the "Hooked on OC" Facebook page, and described the encounter as a "once-in-a-lifetime experience."
