MARDELASPRINGS, Md. - While flooding is common for those on Delmarva when a significant storm sweeps through, one woman in Mardela Springs is still dealing with the aftermath days after.
Darlene Mills lives on Snethen Church Road and still has inches of sitting water in her backyard from last week.
"Right now we've got a swimming pool," Mills said. "It's never happened like this before. I mean we could've gotten a little water in the yard, but it went right down."
Mills suspects the flooding is being caused by a clogged drainage pipe that runs underneath Route 313.
"That drain needs to be open up to let it drain through," Mills said.
After multiple calls to the Maryland State Highway Administration, Mills took it upon herself to hire a crew to clear the Riverton Road side of the highway. Mills said while that side is still clear, it hasn't made a big difference for her property.
"This is uncalled for. They wouldn't want to live like this. And my house is only 17 years old," Mills said.
But Mills' property isn't the only one that experiences flooding in Wicomico County. But county officials say they've worked hard over the last year in nearly a dozen areas to clear drainage pipes and clean ditches.
Director of Public Works Dallas Baker says flooding affects the entire county, but crews have seen differences through the improvements. Since Mills' property is being affected by a state road, SHA will be the agency to fix the issue.
WBOC reached out to SHA on Monday. Officials said they planned to have crews in that area on Tuesday morning. Once a crew evaluates the property, a recommendation can be made for next steps to help mitigate the flooding.
