Controversial Confederate Monument's Fate Decided in Talbot County

EASTON, Md.- Some people in Talbot County are seeking to complete the county's historical story with another war monument on the grounds of the courthouse.

Ken Eaton and Stephen Hunter are the brains behind the monument. They say adding, not taking away from the history already outside of the courthouse is their  mission.

"We have an incredibly rich history in Talbot County that should be told and needs to be told," Hunter said.

He says the idea for a union monument adjacent to the Talbot Boys Confederate Monument came about over one hundred years ago. He simply wants to finish the project.

"The idea was there should be two monuments on the courthouse square. There should be one union and one confederate. One was built and one never was."

Eaton has already found a monument artist from Pennsylvania. An artist's drawing shows a two-soldier monument just feet from the confederate monument.

"I don't feel like I'm gonna gain anything personally by it, but I grew up here in Talbot County and I love this county and I'd like to continue telling the story. We realize not everyone will agree with everything that happens but it's a part of the history of this county and I think it needs to be told," Eaton said.

But not everyone agrees. Carla Howell of Easton says she thinks both monuments don't belong outside of the courthouse.

"I think it's sad that people are so insensitive to how hurtful the confederate statue is and doing two is just wishy washy."

Hunter and Eaton say they're moving forward nonetheless.

"We have a huge opportunity here to tell the history of our county and do right by everybody in our county," Hunter said.

Both men presented their idea to the Talbot County Council last month. Their approval is required for the project to go forward.

Eaton and Hunter say there's no timetable for when the decision could be made.
