Man Who Drowned off Assateague Coast Identified

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md.- Authorities have released the name of a man who drowned in an unguarded section of the ocean off the coast of Assateague Island National Seashore on Tuesday.

The man was identified as 45-year-old Charles Poole of Trappe, Pennsylvania, according to Liz Davis, education coordinator for Assateague Island.

Surfers discovered Poole unresponsive in the water and brought him ashore, where lifeguards performed CPR. He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Poole's 16-year-old son was swimming with him in what Davis described as "rough surf" while his father was unable to make it to shore.

Park officials are warning visitors to use caution in the water, with offshore storms contributing to potentially dangerous conditions.
